Magic Applications
How to apply for a magic-user on Ashirion. You will need to talk with Hellion or Coren over your idea for a mage/magic-user. Remember that anything that disrupts the theme will be instantly refused and to keep the spell list fairly small (Around 8 is a good number).
To help you with your magical choices here are some fast and loose guidelines.
First read news Magecraft thoroughly, and then refer back to this document unless you already have.
It is always wise to remember that Ashirion is not a combat based MU*, while we do have combat situations, we also reward RP over attempting to battle/fight the other characters. You'll often have enough to do just keeping up with the various plots and subplots that /are/ there if you know where to look. A good range of defensive and support spells is always useful, along with a number of healing and curative magics. Although priestly based healing will always be more effective on Ashirion than magical 'mage' healings.
For attack magics, try not to come up with spells that have a wide area of effect or cannot be avoided, dodged and so forth. They will not be approved. It is better to err on the side of caution when designing or using spells, but always feel free to discuss spell ideas with the 3 of us...you'll find that we are more than happy to to come up something that does work. It would be impossible to list all the spells and spell-types you could come up with using this freeform system and I am quite frankly loathed to.
So please contact our 2 admin, and I will usually be involved in some small way myself since I have final veto over the Magic used on the gameworld.
Sadly after the number of new players who have generated characters on Ashirion, then have requested magic specials (the generation of which has taken a great deal of time and effort by the admin, often taking time from their own rl work/leisure time to do so) and have then never come back to the mux, myself and Coren the wizards responsible for setting these specials have reached the following descision.
Your first character on Ashirion may not be a magic user. Once you have tried out the mux, decided you want to stay (we hope:)) you can then think upon a magic type character. This also gives you a chance to observe how magic works on the mux and the sort of things people can do. You may of course, decide to enroll your character at the Mages School and learn magic that way:)
We apologise for the neccessity of enforcing such a ruling.
Finally! The question of magic is resolved!!!
If a player wants their character to be able to learn magic as in
spells, wishes a quirky sort of wierd skill (not usually available to first time players) or wants healing type magics at character outset, then they MUST buy the skill "Magical Ability" from the skills shop. I call this type of skills "specials" and they may ONLY be set on you by myself, Wolf or Coren and MUST be applied for by @mail BEFORE your character is approved, saying that you discussed it with another admin or paged us is not acceptable. We all have great demands on our time and @mail is the only way you can be sure your query has reached us.
Also note. A players first alt may have the magic ability skill but they may not begin play with spells or specials.
An Average in this skill will grant you up to 2 specials. An Above Average will grant you up to 5 specials. An Expert will grant you up to 8 specials.
The total number of specials is at the disgretion of the named admin. Their descision is final as they do have to consider game and theme balance. Some specials may require more than one slot to fill.
Please note: It is possible to learn certain forms of magic via rp at a later date, or to obtain gifts from certain powerful npc personages again, via rp. However this is the ONLY way you can have an alt ever to learn magical mage type skills or begin game play with spells or specials of ANY nature. This descision ultimately has been made to maintain game balance and character power levels at the outset of game play. What powers a player obtains after that point is by virtue of their rp skills alone.
So if you meet someone with kick arse specials or magic. They earned it ICLLY on the grid and you to can do the same!
A definition of the Magical Ability Special: This typifies the characters connection with the 'weave' of Ashirions magic, those who do not have this Special are considered for game purposes - magically dead and can /never/ learn magic.
